His granddaughter (my grandmother) came to Seattle in 1923 where the family has pretty much remained - His family today numbers well over 100 no doubt. I have his compass and picture of his wife (Susan Green) and 3 children he carried all thru the war.

Comments: Like so many families of Monroe County, Ohio, I have numerous ancestors (from 8 direct bloodlines) that served in the 78th OVI. Any photos, especially those with identifications, are invaluable to me; however, a clearer understanding and view from their perspectives gives me a deeper understanding of what's behind and beyond the photos, letters, and journal entries.
Admin reply: Thanks for the comment. My own 78th OVVI ancestors are also from Monroe County. With eight different bloods that you cite, we might be related!

Comments: Henry Warden Thornton, was born 1 October 1825, Culpeper Co., Virginia. His family moved to Gallia Co., Ohio when he was about eight. On 11 October 1864, Henry enlisted as a private in Company K of the Ohio 78th. On a march through Georgia, Henry grew ill and was unable to keep up with the regiment, which subsequently left him behind! Back home, Henry had served as lay leader of a Methodist congregation. And now, resting on a fence in the countryside, he prayed to God saying, "If I am so unworthy as to be left behind, amen to it". Isaiah 41:10 came to his mind: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness”. With renewed strength, Henry was actually caught up with his company! Henry was discharged on 2 June 1865 at a Camp Dennison, Ohio hospital and returned to his home, family and church. He died 20 August 1918, age 92.
